Why use foam by the metre?

Foam by the metre is an essential ally for upholsterers and skilled DIYers. Whether you're making your own seat covers, restoring a seat cushion or just looking to add a bit more comfort to your car interior, it's the base material to have on hand. You cut it, glue it, shape it to your needs.

Its main strength: flexibility. You can line a cover that's too thin, pad a tired headrest or create a layer of comfort on an old bench seat that's lost its bounce. With a little patience and method, you can do wonders.

Our 5 mm and 10 mm mesh-backed foam

We offer two thicknesses by the running metre, both backed with a mesh fabric: one foam side, one mesh side. This construction lets you sew the foam directly without it tearing at the needle, and gives a clean, solid finish.

5 mm: ideal for lining a leather, faux-leather or fabric cover and giving it a softer, springier feel.
10 mm: perfect for adding real comfort thickness, for more pronounced padding (worn seats, hollow backrests, armrests).

The foam is polyurethane, soft, elastic and durable, designed to handle the demands of daily automotive use.

What is it actually used for?

Here are the most common uses our customers make of this foam:

– Lining new covers (leather, faux leather or fabric) for a softer feel
– Padding a seat or backrest whose original foam has flattened
– Refreshing a tired headrest
– Creating custom covers (utility vehicles, classic cars, unusual seats)
– Padding door panels or rear parcel shelves

Paired with our fabric, faux leather and leather coverings, you can build covers exactly to your needs.

How to cut and glue it?

Foam by the metre cuts easily with a sharp utility knife or good scissors. For clean cuts, lay it flat on a stable surface and mark your lines with a felt-tip first.

To glue it to your cover or backing, use a spray neoprene contact adhesive for fabrics (spray both faces, wait 1 minute, then press firmly). You'll find everything you need in our Hardware category: staples, plastic profiles and fitting accessories.
